In 1999 the US Mint began the 50 State Quarter program which it produced 50 quarter dollar coins with special designs honoring each state. These coins where minted in the order in which they joined the union. The reverse of the coin has the portrait of George Washington which is the side where the mint mark designation is located on. In 2009 the District of Columbia and U.S Territories where added to this collection. Unlike other years, this year they US Minted produced 6 coins to complete this set.
